Kiln Specs
Skutt KMT1227-3 | 9.9 cubic ft | approx 28″x28″
Firing Temperatures
Bisque – Cone 05 | Glaze – Cone 5. If you wish to fire to a different temperature, you will need to rent the whole kiln.
Bisque firings will candle for 3 hours
Glaze firings will hold for 10 minutes. ONLY BISQUED PIECES WILL BE ACCEPTED FOR GLAZE FIRINGS. No greenware is permitted in a glaze firing due to the increased risk to the kiln and other pieces.
How it Works
Space may be rented by item (price based on size), 1/2 shelf or shelf, or by the whole kiln. Rentals other than the whole kiln will be fired when the kiln is sufficiently full for the type of firing.
Please note: If you have a particularly fragile piece, you may be asked to transfer it to the kiln yourself.
Pricing
Depending on the volume of what you have to fire, pricing may be per piece, per shelf, or for a half or whole kiln. Pricing is also dependent on bisque/glaze.
There is a $10 Minimum for all kiln space rentals.
By Cubic Inch:
Bisque (05) – .04¢/ cubic inch (max height 10”)
Glaze (6) – .07¢/ cubic inch (max height 10”)
Full Kiln:
Bisque: $70
Glaze: $100
Kiln Damage
If your piece causes damage to the kiln due to running glaze, melting, or an explosion from an improperly dried or hollowed piece, it may incur a damage fee to cover repairs. If you are worried about your piece sticking to the shelf, please request a cookie. A limited number of cookies are available for propping up pieces, but please keep the bottom 1/4″ of your piece free of glaze and cleanly wipe the bottoms.
Damage Fees:
Single piece melted to shelf: $15 (please note that this only applies if it damages the kiln shelf, minor chips to the wash are considered regular wear and tear)
Extensive half-shelf damage: $50
Extensive full-shelf damage: $100
Restrictions
Labeling
All pieces must be clearly signed/labeled to avoid confusion with ownership
Size
Unless you are renting the full kiln, pieces should be no taller than 10″. Larger pieces may be accomodated for an additional fee, as it reduces the number of shelves that can be used in a firing.
Drop Off
Pieces should be dropped off bone-dry and ready for firing.
Glaze
Please wipe the bottoms of your pieces and ensure glaze is a minimum 1/4″ from the bottom. Runny glazes may need more. If you are using a glaze that drips or is thickly applied, please let me know so that I can plan to use a cookie underneath or provide your own cookie.
First-Time Renters
First-time renters will be asked to sign a waiver confirming they have read and agree to all the rules.
Pick-Up
Fired pieces must be picked up within 2 weeks of firing. The kiln is fired when there is a sufficient load. If you are on a deadline, please let me know in advance of renting your space to ensure it will be done in time.
