Artist Statement
Cassandra/CJ Blackthorn is a multimedia artist based in Plymouth, Massachusetts. She holds a B.A. in Fine Arts and an Associate’s in Education from Smith College. She has worked as a teaching artist for school districts, nonprofits, and other institutions.
As a sculptor, her work eschews the milquetoast aestheticism of perfection, instead embracing and emphasizing every blemish of nature. Some of her work veers into the cerebral, exploring the inherent untrustworthiness of perception, anthropomorphizing the why of our discomforts and anxieties.
As an illustrator, CJ is drawn to ancient lore, weaving mythos and mysticism into a complex narrative tapestry. Inspired by the works of Pixie Smith, Alexander Jamieson, and Hieronymus Bosch, in Cassandra’s illustrations, folklore is translated through a modern lens.
